Each of our projects is custom designed to be a reflection of the people who live there. We pay close attention to the details which are revealed in the finished product.

The Design Process

Initial Consultation
A meeting will be set-up for Thomson Architects to come to your home and discuss the overall project objectives, which can be abstract at this point. We will discuss the types of spaces you would like in your remodel or addition and questions will be asked, such as:

  • How do you use your current home?
  • What don’t you like about your current space and what do you like?
  • What is your lifestyle like?
  • Do you like to entertain?
  • Do you have a specific design style that you are drawn to?
  • What types of things would you like to add or change?

After the initial meeting, a proposal for architectural services will be sent to you. The next phase will move forward as desired.

Schematic Design
This phase involves taking measurements of the existing conditions to design rough sketches that will show the general arrangements of your new space(s). These sketches are not “finished “ construction documents; instead they are meant to show possible options for you to consider. The sketches will be refined until you are pleased with the outcome.

Design Development
During this phase, schematic design sketches will be elaborated, fine tuned, and we will begin to discuss specific design elements in more detail such as fixtures and finishes, lighting, structural elements, etc. At this point, you will approve the design before moving forward.

Preparing Construction Documents
Once the design is finalized, the construction documents will be prepared. These documents will be submitted to the town building department for approval, along with the request of a building permit for construction. Additional questions and decisions are made about final design items. You will begin interviewing potential builders and visiting suppliers to select materials.

After the construction documents are completed and given to the homeowner, we will continue to assist you through the process of hiring a builder and answering any additional questions that you may have. We will visit the job site and provide construction observation services as needed.
